CAKE

CAKE’s mission is to speed up the transition toward a zero-emission society, by combining excitement with responsibility. Sustainability is our reason to exist and is simply inseparable from our business. And it is a team effort, every bike rolling the street, nature, or savanna charged with renewable energy is creating impact, enabled by all employees, suppliers, and users of cake.

However, zero-emissions while driving (any electric vehicle) will not save our home planet, it is also about the product itself, its materials, production processes, logistics, and not least its end of life. To put it simply, we need to use less resources, use them longer and keep them circulating, why CAKE’s top sustainable priority is to extend the product life of our bikes.

Not least, sustainability at CAKE also means to live in coexistence with nature and the people around us and create smarter, greener, healthier, and more peaceful surroundings for all. Therefore CAKE builds products for anyone to explore nature and cities with respect, regardless of age, gender, size, or style.

CAKE'S story so far
CAKE was founded in 2016 by the acknowledged entrepreneur in strategy, design, and branding, Stefan Ytterborn. From the very start, the goal was to create electric motorcycles that would combine excitement with responsibility while inspiring the shift to a zero-emission society. The mantra instilled in the design team was “light, quiet, and clean” and the result would two years later manifest itself in the first model, the Kalk, that first saw the light of day in January 2018. Electricity isn’t simply electricity - there’s a whole science to it. This is why we’ve set out to explain the most common (and some not-so-common) words and sentences floating around.

What we talk about when we talk about electricity
First things first, a little background storytelling to set the scene. Did you know that only one-fourth of the electricity generated globally is made from renewable sources? This means that our world still primarily runs on dirty electricity, generated by burning coal, oil, and natural gas. It naturally also has a major impact on our environment, and additionally plays a huge role in current and historical geopolitical realities.

What the future holds
Since day one, the ambition to inspire a zero-emission society has been at the very heart of our operations. With our models gaining interest from more and more professional riders and companies alike, and with increased demand among both consumers and companies for efficient, emission-free vehicles that don’t contribute to the rising issue of congestion, we’ve developed a new range of vehicles that builds on our existing platforms, but cater specifically for professional use.

The aptly named: work series launched in November 2021, featuring revamped editions of both the Kalk, Ösa, and Makka, that had been tuned and optimized for everything from modern last-mile delivery couriers and service professionals to craftsmen, park rangers, and carpenters. These are truly durable service tools with prolonged product life cycles, built for high efficiency and low TCO.

What does the future hold for us? Plenty, we’re happy to admit. In 2022 we’ll among other things continue our ground-breaking sustainability project with Vattenfall, where we investigate the feasibility of building a climate-neutral motorcycle. We’ll continue to innovate the field of midsize motorcycles, championing the segment and spreading the gospel of clean, quiet riding. All this is in line with our mission credo - to develop high-quality, sustainable electric motorcycles that will inspire toward a zero-emission society.

CAKE’s mission
Is to speed up the journey towards a zero-emission society, while enhancing excitement and fun. CAKE is an outdoor and technology company developing light and totally silent electric high-performance off-road motorcycles while delivering clear sustainable benefits for both the rider and its surrounding environment.

Are Cake bikes waterproof?
Cake bikes cannot be submerged but can withstand rain and riding through some water. Always be cautious when cleaning the bike. The bike's electrical components can be damaged if cleaned improperly which can damage the bike, property, or people. Always make sure that the bike is standing firmly before washing and don’t forget to turn the bike off. Never use a pressure washer or a water hose in order to clean the bike. It’s recommended to use pressurized air, a bucket of water together with a cloth and brush. When cleaning the chain, use a chain cleaner and scrub the chain with a brush. Repeat the cleaning before drying the chain and apply chain lube.

The app

How do I download the app to my phone?
From the iOS App Store.

Is the app free of charge?
Yes, the current app can be used free of charge.

How do I connect the bike to the app?
On first use, create an account with the provided connectivity ID and when the app asks for permission to pair via Bluetooth, press “accept”.

Lock and Unlock
The Lock and Unlock functions are only available when the bike is connected to the phone via Bluetooth. Note that on Kalk and Ösa the lock/unlock feature requires the bike to be switched on and kill switch to be in drive position

Changing the PIN of the bike
When the bike PIN code is changed then you need to insert it again via the App to control the Lock function.

Position update of the bike
The last position of your bike is sent to the app via GSM of your Bike so the location is not updated with the Bluetooth connection and might change with a slight delay. The location of the bike is updated only when the bike is moved.

Battery percentage and charging status update
If you unplug the charger while your bike is turned off, then the app might advertise the status as "charging". As soon as you turn your bike on then the status will be corrected. The percentage of the battery and the charging status may be different when the Bluetooth is connected and when it is not connected as without a Bluetooth connection the information is sent from the bike to your app via GSM, which might not update instantly but in some minutes, whereas Bluetooth updates information instantly.

Track ride
Track ride is using your phone’s GPS to track the ride so be sure to carry your phone with you when tracking a ride.

Bluetooth connection
If you are unable to connect your bike to the app then try following these steps:
1. Close the app
2. Open your phone's Bluetooth settings and find your Bike under your Bluetooth devices
3. Click the “Info” button
4. Press “Forget This Device”
5. Turn Bluetooth OFF and then back ON under settings
6. Open the app and try to connect again

Custom brake mode
When you change the custom break mode slider then be sure to also change the brake mode on your bike again in order for the customized sliders to apply.

Custom ride mode
Custom ride mode is accessed on your bike by choosing:
  • Kalk OR: Set the dial to “Ride mode 3”
  • Kalk&/Kalk INK&: Choose “Ride mode C” on the display
  • Makka: Choose “Ride mode 2”

When you change the custom ride mode sliders then be sure to also change the ride mode on your bike again in order for the customized sliders to apply.

Can I retrofit my bike without the module?
Retrofitting a bike without a module is not possible. The CAKE Connect is a newly added feature and is included in the new standard price.

Will my bike always have the latest firmware?
Yes. If your bike has an installed CAKE Connect module that is activated, your bike is connected over GSM which enables CAKE to install and update the firmware Over The Air.

What's cellular connection?
The cellular connection enables the bike to be connected, it's free of charge for the two first years from the delivery date. The two first years are followed by an optional subscription.

How does the app differ from Business customers, consumers, and between the models?
Currently, the app is available with all functionality for all users.

Will it be available for Android?
We are working hard to bring you the app on Android, it will be available soon, with the same module as installed on the bikes. The Android app will of course be compatible with all bikes equipped with a connectivity module. No need to wait, just connect your bike as soon as the bike is available.

I don't have cellular connectivity where I am located, is the app still useful to me?
Yes, the app uses both cellular and Bluetooth connectivity to function. Some features are available through Bluetooth connection and your app will still be valuable without cellular connectivity.

Battery and charging

How do I charge my bike?
You can use your home’s regular 120V/220V outlet to charge your bike. Always read the charging manual before charging. You can charge your battery at any percentage of charge. When charging the bike, do the following steps:

  1. Make sure that the battery is connected to the bike (both connectors, the big red one and the small yellow one)
  2. Disconnect the kill switch
  3. Turn on the master switch (pointing upwards)
  4. Plug the charger into the bike (charger connector can be found under the bike, close to the triple clamps)
  5. Plug the charger into the outlet (120V or 220V). Do not interrupt the charging process
  6. Lastly, let the battery charge fully, this may take longer than expected from the first time while the cells balance

  • When the charger is connected, it will show a red light. When the charging is done, it will light in green
  • When the charging is finished, don’t forget to put the rubber cap on the connector, not to break it during riding
  • Never use the charger in any other application than with the CAKE bike
  • Never use any other charger than the original CAKE charger
  • Never have the kill switch on the handlebar connected as the bike can be turned on and ridden while the charger is connected. This can cause severe injuries to people or property

Battery crash course
Charging cycles:

The average commute is 11km daily / 200 days a year
1. The battery life in charging, according to this calculation would be 8 years or more
2. You can ride when it's cold but store and charge them at "indoor temperatures"

Will newer versions of batteries fit my older version bike?
YES, all our new batteries are compatible with older versions of bike models.

Can I lock the steering and battery to leave it outside?
In order to keep your bike safe, it is recommended to use an external lock that is recommended for motorcycles. When leaving your bike on the street, always turn the bike off and remove the key and the kill switch from the bike. Lock the steering lock by turning the handlebar all the way to the left and insert the key into the steering lock and turn the key. You will feel how the handlebar will be locked to that position, so you can’t ride the bike. The steering lock is found under the triple clamps between the fork legs.

How does the battery/ bike perform in hot and cold conditions?

Always store the bike indoors away from sunshine to avoid unnecessary aging or discoloration. Never store your bike in below 10° C, if you are unable to store the bike in a temperature above that, remove the battery and bring it inside. It’s recommended to keep your bike inside during if the outside temperature ranges outside of +2°C to +35°C (36 F to 95 F).

Riding during the cold winter?
Riding in the cold is not a problem, but for optimum performance don't leave the battery out in the cold. You can store and charge the battery at indoor temperatures.

Is it possible to remove the battery?
Yes! All CAKE batteries are hot-swappable, meaning users can remove, store and charge the battery separately to the bike.

I’m not riding for the whole winter. What should I do with my battery?
We recommend maintaining your bike’s battery charge at between 50%-75% and turning the kill switch off.

General Information

What's the difference between light, electric Cake motorbikes and a regular dirt bike?
The Kalk Series is close in performance and user matrix to dirt bikes but there are differences. All Kalk models are a power-to-weight ratio optimization pursuit building a chassis as light and lively as possible and around the electric drivetrain. This is in contrast to the normal procedure of merely swapping from combustion to electric in a gasoline chassis (which is extremely heavy).

The Kalk Series is engineered around the electric drivetrain to maximize riding performance. The electric drive train is completely different from an internal combustion engine, with benefits for each side. An electric drivetrain includes a solid battery, electric motor, and a controller, and features instant torque from zero, direct drive. No need for a clutch. There are fewer moving parts, low tinkering, no fumes, no sounds, no filters, no oils, tunable riding modes, and regen braking along with being highly responsive and having great throttle control and swappable batteries.

Building light, electric, uncompromising motorbikes for the ultimate off-road experience requires components engineered for it. Combining off-the-shelf parts from the MTB and motorbike world would lead to a diminished riding experience by increasing the number of parts, bolts, tinkering, welds, and an impaired geometry. As mentioned, the MTB components are too weak for a 69+kg (Kalk OR) motorbike and the MX parts are too heavy. They do not serve the specifics of the electric drivetrain. The same thing goes for traditionally designed electric dirt bikes engineered and optimized for a combustion engine where the ICE (internal combustion engine) is simply swapped for an electric drivetrain, which is not particularly efficient.

The Ösa model is a high-performance utility scooter. These bikes are meant to serve their users as best friends and it is all about transportation: Going to work with a laptop, bringing groceries on the way back home, taking your kids or a friend for a ride, getting the planks from the woodshop, or bringing leisure gear on your adventure, whether it’s a surfboard or a pair of skis. The reasons and options are endless.
