A CLEAN GREEN SPRING BREAK ☀️
As the days get hotter and longer we're aware the week-long spring break is closely emerging around the corner and vacation plans seem to be the only thing on students' minds. For most college students, spring break is a fun opportunity to let loose, go wild, re-charge your worn-out batteries and take a long-earned break from stressful college work, by traveling somewhere warm and getting a complete change of scenery 🎊. What doesn’t sound better than going to wild and outrageous beach raves, and dancing all night long with friends. Oh, and causing absolute havoc of course! 🍹.
A lot of college students tend to flock to South Beach, Miami to partake in boozy and wild behaviors during this party period and get into vacay mode🌴. This is the prime or so-called ‘hot spot’ for those spring breakers up for a great and wild time. You'll find spring breakers soaking up the warmer weather and topping up a much-needed sun-kissed tan whilst enjoying the sandy beach. There is plenty to do, the whole city is completely riddled with nightclubs and bars, loud festive music with wild carefree college students … But that is the traditional go-to norm with over-tourism in popular places.
Others prefer to hit it up in Cancun, Mexico for foam parties which in fairness is biodegradable and non-toxic to the environment. Why not get down with under tourism and scope out less popular and frequently visited places? We suggest the more relaxed route like renting a decked-out RV for the week, or go get wanderlust daydreaming, and observing some beautiful scenery and campgrounds with friends around a fire pit. Sounds very wholesome to us. 🏕

But how should we travel for spring break? Opt for slower transport like bike tours, road trips with your friends, and train rides which typically take longer than flights but it’s cheaper and will cut your carbon footprint. We reckon this leaves way more freedom to have unexpected and spontaneous adventures and have a bit more freedom! Plus the slow route leaves more room for adventure that literally gets overlooked from the sky.
Spring break is a whole lot of fun, however, the popular escape and break can be overdone and does bring about some major downfalls and excessive carbon-foot. We can’t forget, that intense partying can bring negative and quite dangerous impacts on our health and on the environment around us especially our wildlife. The recklessness and chaotic partying behaviors can cause a mass load of plastic waste such as red solo cups, Styrofoam plates, napkins, coolers, and plastic tents to litter and scatter the beaches, yearly. This, unfortunately, contributes to pollution and kills our beautiful wildlife. More interventions and education need to be implemented to overcome the yearly influx of rubbish and pollution contributed. In 2020, the City of Miami actually tried to tackle this problem by launching an education campaign ‘Keep Miami Beach Clean’ to get spring-breakers to clean up after themselves. But because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this sadly came to a quick halt… (Catherine Sautter, 2021)
