This day is an important day in the world of sustainability. Why? Because it's Global Recycling Day! 🌱
You’re all probably familiar with what this day encompasses. Annually, Global Recycling Day sheds light on the environmentally detrimental impacts of wasting and destroying our natural and raw materials, through incineration and landfills, to promote the importance of striving for an eco-friendly, non-polluting world via recycling! 🌍 We as humans haven’t been kind to our planet and it’s time to take urgent and critical action!
The ‘Recycling Fraternity’
This year’s theme for Global Recycling Day 2022 is the ‘'Recycling Fraternity’. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a mass build-up of waste from masks, protective face shields, and food 🍔. This would have been left to pile up and fester causing dangerous and intoxicating greenhouse gas fumes if it wasn’t for amazing front-line workers. (Barbora Vaclavova, 2022).
The Recycling Fraternity deserves special recognition as they have faced this issue head-on, by volunteering to collect and recycle the disappointing amount of rubbish during the pandemic.
Recent national statistics in the USA found that each American citizen produces approximately 1,609 pounds of rubbish each year that goes into landfills! This is an alarming and dangerous amount of waste being left untreated. To put this into comparison, Germany sets the bar for being the best country for recycling, with about 56.1% of net total waste produced annually being transformed into other materials and objects.
5 Reasons Global Recycling Day is Important…
- To inform global leaders that untreated plastic waste and rubbish is not only bad for our planet but a public health concern and humanitarian crisis! Our waters have become polluted and can further damage our ecosystems, it also contributes to greenhouse CO2 emissions and climate change! These fumes aren't good for our health! 🚯

Recycling vs. upcycling?
So what do we know? Recycling is the process in which waste is destroyed into raw materials which are then transformed into amazing new products e.g., plastic is a versatile, resilient, and multi-use material and can be recycled into many things such as clothes, furniture, packaging, the list goes on and on! ♻
